SCROLL:

Dallas,TX – April 21, 2007 – Arrive at Dallas’ Norwood Flynn Gallery and prepare yourself for a series of double takes. Your eye will shift from the brick façade of the 1940’s cottage at 3318 Shorecrest Drive to the rolling footpaths of its view, Bachman Lake. You’ll step up to the bright red door, but feel a pull to stroll along the cool water. This distraction is fortunate. Once inside, you’ll realize that the rippling, clean slate of Bachman Lake has seeped into your mind, quieting it for the new, complex paintings of Charlotte Seifert.

Seifert lives and works in her birthplace, Dallas. She earned her BFA and MFA in painting from Southern Methodist University where she has taught as an adjunct professor and in the Community Education Department since 1993. Her years of teaching have equipped Seifert with a hefty repertoire of savvy techniques, sharpened color sense, and a rigorous, bankable work ethic. Since adopting her present studio space, Seifert has produced a steady sequence of serial work, each piece its own world of memory.

“I am interested in painting as a way of remembering,” says Seifert. “As I paint, the images evolve and recall places that I know…” For the viewer, this amounts to standing at the brink of another’s memory, with its shifting hints of the vaguely familiar. Contextualized branches, seedpods, and vistas coalesce with the tactile quality of Seifert’s paint, drawing the viewer into the nature of paint, memory, and experience. The impact is strong enough to impose influence, so that a walk afterward in the woods, or, say, by a lake, becomes more sensuous and affecting. One can imagine Seifert’s mind in the frame of Walt Whitman when he asks why there are “trees I never walk under but large and melodious thoughts descend upon me?” Charlotte Seifert’s paintings channel more than a few of these “large and melodious thoughts.”

The Norwood Flynn Gallery is located at 3318 Shorecrest Drive, Dallas, Texas. The gallery is open from noon to 5:30pm, Wednesday through Saturday. For more information, visit norwoodflynngallery.com.
